Superior Trail 50 mile race

In a comment to my previous post, I stated I was considering doing a longer than 50K Superior ultra in 2011. This morning on my 12-mile run, I met Brian Peterson and we talked for a minute, specifically about the Superior Trail 50 mile race. It's destiny, and now I have 20 months to prepare. I plan to enjoy the journey from now to the race.

With the cut-offs at the ST 50, why not 2010? May not be the smart thing but who said running a 50 or 100 is smart?

I'm trying something new for training this year - more cross-training and less weekly miles. I want to see how it affects how I run a May road marathon and a September gentle trail marathon in 2010. I also want to see if I'm able to keep on the healthy side of the injury line with the extra cross-training. I'm not in any hurry so 2011 will be just fine for me. Oh, I'm not sure running anything over 25K is smart.

I run ridiculously low mileage (probably won't even hit 800 miles this year), but still finished a 50 miler at Murphy-Hanrehan, 2 50K's 2 weeks apart in the spring (with a 10K in between), and had an injury free season. My weekly mileage pretty much happened on Saturdays for awhile!

That being said, I'm a back of the packer (and don't give a rip), and Murphy-Hanrehan isn't even close to the technical difficulty of Superior.

Perhaps we can share the trail for the Superior 50 Mile in 2011 ;)

What a great goal! That will be a great inspiration for training. Enjoy the ride!

If you're slow enough, you could enter the race this year and finish next year...

Brian's pretty fast. If you can run with him, you'll be ready to run a 50 mile this year, no problem.

I can run with Brian for about a half a mile. :) I won't be training with him....every day can't be a tempo day for me.

2011 works out best because I really want to run a good Birkebeiner marathon at the end of Sept. 2010. There's a good chance I still wouldn't be walking 2 weeks after a 50 miler. )

Mark,

Julie Berg wants feedback from anyone who has a Garmin 310. Thought you had one? http://julieberg.blogspot.com/

I also think that running is a great and very easy exercise that keeps you fit. This is a exercise which don't need any extra care.
